Our Story

Ohana School was founded in 2021 after many years of community work in Soweto slums in Nairobi Kenya offering life skills training to single teenage mothers. Soweto Slum has been distinguished by poverty and dreadful living conditions. As the children grew the biggest need was children’s education, most of these single mothers could not afford to take their children to school. Having been in a similar position growing up. I was determined to do something about it. How could I provide a safe educational environment that fosters learning, christian values and growth, and work with partners and the local community to create a brighter future for these children. Aimed with a passion to equip these young women I worked with various partners to impact their community in their various spheres of influence. I founded Ohana Education Centre as a place. Amidst the challenges and triumphs of founding a school, I embarked on a journey filled with determination and passion. From the inception, I envisioned a place not just for education but a hub of community engagement and collaboration. Implementing outreach programs targeting women, mothers of sons and daughters, they became a cornerstone of our mission, bridging the school with local communities. Facilitating communication among stakeholders – parents, and donors – was paramount to building a strong foundation.

Since our Inception we have strived to grow through partnerships with community organisations who have bolstered our mutual goals and initiatives, enriching the school’s impact.
